Czechoslovak Group Acquires MDA Space Stake

Czechoslovak Group (CSG), the Czech defense and industrial holding owned by Michal Strnad, has acquired a 9.5 percent stake in MDA Space, according to an announcement reported by Seznam Zprávy. MDA Space is a Canadian technology company known for manufacturing robotic arms used on space shuttles and the International Space Station, alongside building communication satellites and earth-observation radar systems.

The transaction places CSG alongside financial group PPF, another prominent Czech investor that built a stake in MDA Space years prior. PPF purchased 10.83 million shares in 2020 before the company went public on the Toronto Stock Exchange, viewing the enterprise as a high-technology growth opportunity in the global aerospace sector, according to PPF corporate communications director Leoš Rousek.

Financial Trajectory and Share Value Fluctuations

MDA Space shares trade publicly on exchanges in Toronto and New York. The company generated over 25.5 billion crowns in revenue last year, marking a 51 percent increase from the prior period, while adjusted EBITDA exceeded 5 billion crowns, Seznam Zprávy reported.

PPF’s early investment yielded substantial paper gains when MDA Space shares reached an all-time high of 67.13 Canadian dollars in May. At that peak, PPF’s stock package reached a market value of 11.3 billion crowns, representing a gain of more than 8.62 billion crowns over its initial purchase price.

Following that peak, share values receded amid investor concerns regarding a new share offering, high capital expenditure, and negative free cash flow. By mid-week in Toronto, shares traded at 41.12 Canadian dollars, valuing PPF’s holdings at just under 7 billion crowns—still more than four billion crowns above the original acquisition cost.

Strategic Intent Behind the Czech Investments

PPF entered the investment through Canadian financier John Risley, whose firm Northern Private Capital led the 2020 consortium that bought MDA Space before taking it public a year later. Stanislav Kuba, now the investment director at CSG, previously worked at PPF during the formation of that consortium.

When asked whether Kuba steered CSG toward the investment, the holding company directed inquiries to spokesperson Andrej Čírtek. CSG evaluated various aerospace opportunities before selecting MDA Space due to its established profitability, advanced technology, and absence of a controlling majority shareholder, according to Čírtek.

While PPF maintains its position as a capital investment, CSG views the move as an industrial partnership. The defense group aims to collaborate with the Canadian firm on expanding European manufacturing capacities, executing joint acquisitions, and entering new markets.

Our investment is therefore not merely a financial decision, but above all a strategic step designed to enable CSG to establish itself in the space industry, The dash stated.
