Dade County Sheriff’s Office Mourns the Loss of K9 Rocco

The Dade County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of K9 Rocco, a distinguished four-legged officer who passed away on Friday, February 13, after years of dedicated service to the citizens of Dade County.

A Career of Service

Throughout his career, K9 Rocco was instrumental in numerous law enforcement operations. He excelled in tracking suspects, detecting illegal narcotics, and assisting deputies in apprehending felons. The Sheriff’s Office highlighted that the amount of illegal drugs Rocco helped remove from the community was “absolutely unimaginable.”

Partnership with Chief Detective York

K9 Rocco spent his entire working life partnered with Chief Detective Casey York. The pair worked closely together in the field before Rocco’s retirement two years ago.

A Well-Deserved Retirement

Following his retirement, Rocco enjoyed a peaceful life at home with Chief Detective York and his family, receiving the care and affection he deserved after years of service.

Policy Updates Following K9 Georgia’s Death

The Dade County Sheriff’s Office recently updated its K9 policy, effective July 24, 2025, following the tragic death of K9 Georgia earlier in the year. The policy overhaul includes disciplinary action for handlers found in violation of the updated guidelines according to WTVC and emphasizes accountability and proper care for all K9 partners as reported by Discover Dade. K9 Georgia died after the vehicle’s air conditioning malfunctioned and the heat alarm in her kennel was not working.

New K9 Deputies Join the Force

The Dade County Sheriff’s Office continues to bolster its K9 Unit. In September 2024, three new K9s – Zeus, Georgia (a bloodhound, and the first of her breed for the DCSO), and Thor – joined the unit alongside K9 Tank and the retiring K9 Rocco as detailed in the Dade County Sentinel.

A Lasting Legacy

The Dade County Sheriff’s Office expressed its sorrow with a simple statement on social media: “We will never forget you, K9 Rocco.” His service and dedication leave a lasting legacy within the department and the community he served.
