Community members helped shape the project through public engagement opportunities, including participating in the artist selection process. At the unveiling, Paul shared his reaction to the artwork honoring his career and roots in nearby Lewisville. “I’m rarely speechless, but this right here is one of the dopest things I’ve ever seen,” Paul said. Peterson also noted the dedication required to complete the project. “All the hard work, all the dedication, all the mental strength it actually takes to get to this point is very rewarding to see people respond with the type of electricity we’ve seen today,” Peterson said.

Student Intern Contributions

Four art majors from Winston-Salem State University worked as paid interns alongside Peterson to help paint the mural. Isabella Como, Corey Cuthrell, Lanyjah Gunter, and Zaria McGill attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Como described the physical demands of the project, noting that the student interns put in eight-hour sessions. “The work was physically a little bit harder because we were constantly on our knees, but we had the equipment to at least make it as comfortable as possible,” Como said.

The tribute aligns with Paul’s ongoing ties to the local academic community. According to Winston-Salem State University, Paul earned his bachelor’s degree in mass communication from the institution in 2022.
