Intranasal Insulin Triggers Right-Hemisphere Response

Nasal insulin delivery captured the shift. When researchers administered insulin via the nasal passage to 31 healthy volunteers aged 60 to 75 years old, arterial spin labeling MRI scans recorded heightened physiological responses across several regions in the right hemisphere of the brain.

Participants consumed 60 grams of unpeeled, roasted peanuts every day for a 16-week period. The research team compared this active diet phase against a control period where participants ate no peanuts.

The resulting MRI scans identified increased insulin sensitivity in specific, targeted structures: the posterior cingulate gyrus, linguale gyrus, parahippocampal gyrus, and hippocampus. These exact areas govern cognitive function and memory formation.

Nutritional Complexity and Vascular Health

Insulin facilitates neuronal communication and learning, though its efficacy typically declines during the aging process. Maastricht University Medical Centre scientists attribute the observed cognitive benefits to the complex nutritional profile of peanuts. The food supplies plant-based proteins, minerals, vitamins, dietary fiber, and unsaturated fats.

Furthermore, peanuts supply L-arginine, an amino acid that triggers the production of nitric oxide to support blood vessel health and cognitive function. Continental Hospitals noted that peanuts provide essential nutrients including vitamin E to combat oxidative stress, niacin for brain metabolism, and magnesium for nerve signal transmission.

Prior Verbal Memory Gains and Vascular Changes

These findings build directly on previous data from the same research group published earlier in the year. That prior study demonstrated that daily peanut consumption led to a 5.8 percent improvement in verbal memory scores. Total blood flow to the brain increased by 3.6 percent over the same evaluation period.

Despite the measurable physiological alterations, the study authors emphasize that the findings do not prove peanuts prevent Alzheimer’s disease or halt overall cognitive decline. The study cohort consisted of 31 participants, which researchers identify as a small sample size. Consequently, the authors caution against broad claims that peanuts offer definitive protection against neurodegenerative conditions. Larger clinical trials with extended observation periods remain necessary to determine if short-term improvements in brain insulin sensitivity translate to lasting cognitive performance gains in older populations.
