Dairy Consumption Linked to Increased Prostate Cancer Risk

Only 20% of U.S. men know that dairy consumption is linked to prostate cancer risk, according to a national survey conducted by Morning Consult for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. The survey, which polled 1,102 men, highlights a widespread public information gap regarding diet and oncology outcomes, even as prostate cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American men outside of skin cancers, according to the American Cancer Society’s 2024 annual report.

Survey Findings Reveal Low Awareness and High Willingness to Change

The Morning Consult poll found that just one in five respondents had ever discussed the relationship between nutrition and prostate cancer risk with a healthcare professional. However, when informed about the statistical association between dairy intake and the disease, 66% of surveyed men stated they would likely avoid dairy products. Additionally, 76% of participants expressed support for placing warning labels on dairy items to alert consumers to the possible prostate cancer risk.

“Physicians and other healthcare professionals need more education on the dangers of dairy products and the benefits of a plant-based diet for prostate cancer,” said Noah Praamsma, a registered dietitian and nutrition education coordinator with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

Observational Research Linking Dairy to Prostate Cancer

Evidence connecting dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt to prostate cancer stems largely from observational research and meta-analyses. A comprehensive meta-analysis combining 32 studies associated higher consumption of dairy products with a greater risk of developing prostate cancer. Individual studies have reported similar patterns among specific populations.

For example, men who consumed at least one daily serving of skim or low-fat milk faced a 19% higher risk of prostate cancer compared to those who rarely drank it. Another longitudinal study tracking 3,612 men for eight to 10 years found that participants consuming the most low-fat dairy—roughly three servings per day—were more than twice as likely to develop prostate cancer as those consuming less than one serving per day.

The potential association extends beyond initial diagnosis. Cancer mortality and dairy consumption were evaluated together in a research review encompassing 11 studies and over 700,000 subjects. Prostate cancer mortality rates were up to 50% greater among individuals with the highest intake of whole milk compared to those with the lowest intake.

Plant-Based Diets and Reduced Risk Factors

While awareness of dairy risks remains low, many men surveyed already recognize the protective potential of plant-based foods. According to Praamsma, most respondents understood that consuming fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans can help protect against prostate cancer.

Data from the Adventist Health Study-2 demonstrated that men eating a vegan diet had a 35% lower risk of prostate cancer than those following nonvegetarian, lacto-ovo-vegetarian, pesco-vegetarian, or semi-vegetarian diets. Furthermore, plant-based eating correlates with improved outcomes following a diagnosis. In a study of more than 2,000 men with prostate cancer, individuals eating the largest amounts of plant-based foods showed a 56% lower risk of disease progression and a 59% lower risk of recurrence compared to those eating the smallest amounts.

Researchers emphasize that these observational studies do not establish a definitive causal link proving that adopting a vegan diet will prevent prostate cancer or halt an existing tumor. Medical experts advise that dietary choices should complement, rather than replace, recommended clinical screenings and standard oncological care.

Prostate Cancer Statistics and Early Detection

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society. Because prostate tumors vary widely from slow-growing forms that cause few symptoms to aggressive cancers capable of rapid metastasis, early detection remains vital.

The American Cancer Society estimated 333,830 new cases of prostate cancer in the United States.
