DakhaBrakha is a world music quartet from Kyiv,Ukraine,fusing Ukrainian musical traditions with international influences to create a unique theatrical experience.
Translating the fundamental elements of sound and soul, DakhaBrakha creates a new and unexpected musical universe. The name itself, “give/take” in the ancient Ukrainian language, is original, remarkable, and authentic.
Founded in 2004 at the Contemporary Art Center “DAKH” in Kyiv by avant-garde theater director Vladyslav Troitskyi, DakhaBrakha’s performances retain a strong theatrical element. The group’s journey began with experimentation in Ukrainian folk music, but quickly expanded to incorporate rhythms from around the globe.
This integration has resulted in a luminous, unique, and unforgettable sound, revealing the potential of Ukrainian melodies and introducing them to both younger generations in Ukraine and audiences worldwide. Accompanied by conventional instruments from various countries,DakhaBrakha’s surprisingly powerful and uncompromising vocals create a transnational sound deeply rooted in Ukrainian culture.
