Cesis Art Festival: Contemporary Visions and Latvian Sounds

The XIX Cesis Art Festival runs from July 18th to august 30th, presenting a multifaceted program of artistic expression. The festival kicks off with the group exhibition Naked Life at the Cesis Old Beer Brewer, showcasing the work of nine Latvian artists: Anna Ceipes, Anna Spruce, Ieva Putnina, Hanel Zane Putnina, Anna Moscow, Ieva kraule-Kūnas, Vika Eksta, Ieva Raudsepa, and Kris Salmanis.This exhibition promises a raw and intimate exploration of contemporary themes.

Sigma in concert: A Fusion of Piano and Orchestra

On July 18th at 7:30 PM, the Cesis Concert Hall will host a performance by the acclaimed Latvian instrumental group Sigma.The frist half of the evening will feature pianist Jānis Ozoliņš performing selections from Philip Glass – including pieces from the film The Hours and Opening and Mad Rush. Sigma (comprising Jānis Ozoliņš, Kaspars Lastovskis, and Uģis Eihvalds) will then join forces with the Vidzeme Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Andris Veismanis, to perform songs from their celebrated albums. This collaboration represents a compelling blend of contemporary composition and orchestral grandeur.

A Star Performance at Dzintari: Sidorova and the National Symphony

Accordion virtuoso Xenia Sidorova takes center stage on July 18th at the Dzintari Concert Hall at 8:00 PM. Performing alongside the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Andris Poga, Sidorova will present the world premiere of a new accordion concerto by British and Bulgarian composer Dobrinka Tabakova. This piece, specifically commissioned for Sidorova, debuted in May in Stuttgart to critical acclaim. The program also includes Respighi’s Roman Fountains and Dvorak’s Eighth Symphony, promising a rich and emotionally resonant evening.

Cellist Walter Owl and pianist Dainis Tenis will present Pop Goes Classical, a program reimagining popular melodies through a classical lens.Following this, the internationally renowned Ukrainian ethno-fusion quartet Dakhabrakha will take the stage. Dakhabrakha blends traditional Ukrainian folk music with elements of jazz, rock, and hip-hop, creating a uniquely powerful and captivating sound. Their performances have garnered widespread recognition, with the group recently featured in The New York Times for their innovative approach to world music.
