“I Told You So!”: Dallas Comedy Club’s Storytelling Display Celebrates a Third Year
Dallas Comedy Club’s monthly storytelling show, “I Told You So!”, is entering its third year, offering audiences a unique blend of humor and heartfelt personal narratives. The show distinguishes itself by finding the funny side of everyday life, proving that relatable experiences can be comedic gold.
How “I Told You So!” Works
Each “I Told You So!” show features three performers sharing true, personal stories live. What sets this show apart is the improvisational twist: an improv comedy group, present in the audience, creates scenes based on the stories they’ve just heard – without any prior knowledge. This spontaneous collaboration ensures each show is fresh, and unpredictable.
Creator Dan Sturdivant, who also teaches a storytelling class at Dallas Comedy Club, emphasizes the show’s focus on self-deprecating humor. “You don’t make fun of people; you make fun of yourself,” Sturdivant explains. Stories shared are generally appropriate for a wide audience, though the show is geared towards adults and may occasionally include language reflecting real-life experiences.
Storytelling vs. Stand-Up
Whereas similar to stand-up comedy, “I Told You So!” fosters a different kind of connection with the audience. Sturdivant notes that while jokes from a stand-up routine might be quickly forgotten, the immersive nature of storytelling leads to a more lasting impact. “You’re going to come home, you’re going to remember everything about each one of those stories because they’re presented in a way that makes it endearing to you,” he says.
