Gou Tanabe’s “The Dunwich Horror” Deluxe Edition Coming from Dark Horse Comics

Dark Horse Comics will release a Deluxe Edition of Gou Tanabe’s manga adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s The Dunwich Horror on September 29. The 650-page hardcover will retail for $49.99.

Lovecraftian Horror in Manga Form

The Dunwich Horror, originally published in 1929, tells the story of Wilbur Whateley, a child born into a secluded and unsettling family in Dunwich, Massachusetts. As Wilbur grows, it becomes clear he is not a typical boy and his pursuit of forbidden knowledge threatens to unleash ancient horrors upon the world. The story follows Dr. Henry Armitage, head librarian at Miskatonic University, as he investigates the strange events surrounding the Whateley family and attempts to prevent a terrifying fate.

Tanabe’s Acclaimed Adaptations

Gou Tanabe is a Japanese manga artist renowned for his adaptations of H.P. Lovecraft’s works. His manga adaptations have been translated into multiple languages, including English, French, German, and Spanish. Dark Horse Comics has previously published several of Tanabe’s Lovecraft adaptations, including The Hound and Other Stories (2017), At the Mountains of Madness (2019), The Call of Cthulhu (which won the Superior Achievement in a Graphic Novel award at the Bram Stoker Awards in June 2025), The Colour Out of Space (July 2024), and The Shadow Out of Time (December 16, 2024).

Creative Team and Publication Details

Zack Davisson is translating the manga, and Steve Dutro is handling the lettering. The manga was initially serialized in Kadokawa’s Monthly Comic Beam magazine from October 2021 to April 2023. Tanabe also recently completed Short Stories about Dreamlands (November 2023 – April 2024) and Lovecraft no Genei (The Lovecraft’s Phantom) (June 2024 – December 2024) for Comic Beam.
