Wirth explained that Leaphorn’s decision stems from a desire to heal and reconnect with his Navajo heritage and potentially reconcile with his wife, Emma. In a surprising turn, Leaphorn asks Sergeant Bernadette Manuelito to take over his position as Lieutenant.
Bernadette is hesitant about accepting the role, acknowledging the challenges of a woman leading in the 1970s and the potential impact on her relationship with Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon). Matten noted the complexities of Bernadette’s situation, balancing her ambition with the emotional weight of her recent experiences.
Chee and Bernadette Navigate a New Dynamic
The premiere also explores the evolving relationship between Jim Chee and Bernadette Manuelito, who began a romantic relationship at the end of season three. The episode depicts their attempts to navigate a domestic life while grappling with the aftermath of Bernadette’s past actions and the uncertainties of their future. Wirth highlighted the realism of their interactions, portraying the challenges of building a relationship amidst personal turmoil.

The episode features a cameo appearance by Linda Hamilton, reuniting her with Zahn McClarnon after their function together in the early 1990s. The season premiere also includes a title card honoring Robert Redford, who served as an executive producer and made a cameo appearance in season three. The Case of the Missing Teen
As Leaphorn contemplates retirement, the Navajo Tribal Police start investigating the disappearance of Billie Tsosie. Their investigation leads them to Billie’s boarding school and ultimately back to the diner, where they discover a tragic scene. The search for Billie continues, leaving viewers with unanswered questions.
