Dave Grohl Explains Foo Fighters’ Decision to Part Ways with Josh Freese
Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has publicly addressed the band’s decision to move on from drummer Josh Freese, explaining the choice was a collective one reached after months of deliberation. The conversation marks the first time Grohl has spoken about the departure, which occurred after Freese joined the band in 2023 following the death of Taylor Hawkins.
A Difficult Transition After Taylor Hawkins
The passing of Taylor Hawkins in March 2022 left a significant void in the Foo Fighters. Hawkins had been the band’s drummer for 25 of their 30 years together, making the search for a replacement particularly challenging. Grohl reflected on this difficulty, noting that even Nirvana, his previous band, went through five drummers before he joined as their fifth.
Josh Freese’s Time with the Band
Josh Freese stepped in as Foo Fighters’ drummer in May 2023, bringing a wealth of experience having worked with artists ranging from Michael Bublé to The Offspring. The band embarked on a tour with Freese, enjoying a “blast” and a “great time” together. However, after a year and a half on the road, the band began to consider their next steps.
The Decision to Move Forward
Following a break from touring, the Foo Fighters spent approximately six to seven months discussing their future direction. “In those six or seven months, as a band, we talked about what to do next, a new direction and we thought, ‘OK, let’s call Josh and let him grasp that we are going to move on with a different drummer,’” Grohl explained in an interview with Zane Lowe. The band collectively made the call, expressing their gratitude to Freese for his contributions.
A Respectful Conversation
Grohl described the conversation with Freese as direct and appreciative. “Basically, we called Josh, and we were like, ‘Hey man, that was awesome. That was such a blast, thank you so much, but we’re going to move on and find another drummer.’” The band chose not to publicly address the situation immediately following the conversation, refraining from press releases, social media posts, or interviews.
Freese’s Perspective and Current Lineup
According to Grohl, Freese himself acknowledged that the Foo Fighters’ music didn’t fully resonate with him. Freese has since rejoined Nine Inch Nails, and the Foo Fighters have welcomed Ilan Rubin, a touring member of Nine Inch Nails, as their new drummer. Grohl expressed his enthusiasm about Rubin joining, stating, “It’s like we feel like a band again, man.”
Looking Ahead
The Foo Fighters are preparing to release their 12th album, Your Favorite Toy, on April 24th, having recently released the title track. The band performed the song on The Graham Norton Show, sans Pat Smear, who is recovering from a foot injury sustained in a gardening accident.
