Convicted triple murderer Erin Patterson has been approved for taxpayer-funded Ozempic injections while serving a life sentence at Melbourne’s Dame Phyllis Frost Centre, drawing sharp public criticism from Australian comedian Dave Hughes. Patterson, 51, is currently held in near-continuous isolation for 22 to 23 hours a day as she awaits the outcome of an appeal against her convictions for serving a fatal death cap mushroom lunch in Leongatha, Victoria, in July 2023.
Dave Hughes Challenges Prison Ozempic Approval
Comedian Dave Hughes criticized the decision to supply the weight-loss and diabetes medication to a high-security inmate confined to her cell. In a social media post, Hughes mocked the rationale behind the prescription given Patterson’s restricted environment.
“She’s in solitary confinement, she’s not trying to keep away from the buffet on a cruise,” Hughes said. “Just ask for less food through the flap, Erin.”
Victoria’s Department of Justice and Community Safety defended the medical decision without addressing Patterson individually. According to a departmental spokesperson, prisoners may receive weight-loss medication only when a clinician establishes a clear medical necessity, such as preventing type 2 diabetes or managing rapid weight gain linked to extreme confinement. Ozempic contains semaglutide, a treatment primarily approved for type 2 diabetes that also yields weight loss.
Security Concerns and Political Backlash
Internal dissent accompanied the prescription rollout. According to a prison source quoted by Australian media, facility management faced criticism for prioritizing the weight of a convicted killer while correctional staff face ongoing safety challenges inside the maximum-security institution.
Brad Batten, the Victorian Opposition’s spokesperson for police and corrections, also questioned the management of prisoner health and diets. Batten suggested that authorities should focus on expanding exercise opportunities or reviewing standard prison food rather than relying on pharmaceutical interventions.
Legal Status and Ongoing Appeal Proceedings
The medical controversy unfolds while Patterson awaits a decision from the Victorian Court of Appeal regarding her September 2025 sentencing. Patterson was convicted of murdering her in-laws Don and Gail Patterson and Gail’s sister, Heather Wilkinson, alongside the attempted murder of Heather’s husband, Ian Wilkinson, after serving beef Wellingtons laced with lethal death cap mushrooms. She was sentenced to life imprisonment with a non-parole period of 33 years.
During her 11-week trial, Patterson testified about struggles with binge eating and body image. Her legal defense team subsequently advanced seven grounds of appeal, arguing that the original trial involved a substantial miscarriage of justice. Simultaneously, prosecutors challenged the 33-year non-parole term, arguing the sentence is manifestly inadequate given the severity of the crimes. Justices Stephen McLeish, Lesley Taylor, and Peter Kidd heard both appeals in August, and the court’s reserved decision remains pending.
