Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari Revival: Is the Seven-Time Champion “Not Done”?
Lewis Hamilton’s recent podium finish at the Chinese Grand Prix has sparked debate about his future in Formula 1, quashing rumors of potential retirement. The 41-year-old driver secured third place, marking his first podium with Ferrari since joining the team in 2025.
Podium Finish Fuels Continued Drive
After a challenging first season with Ferrari, speculation arose regarding Hamilton’s commitment to the sport. Still, his performance in Shanghai suggests he remains highly motivated. David Coulthard, a former F1 driver, believes Hamilton’s success demonstrates he is far from finished with racing. “I don’t think so,” Coulthard stated on the Up To Speed podcast. “The mind of a sportsperson…is all about the here and now.”
Coulthard emphasized that Hamilton is focused on the present opportunity at Ferrari, and will likely reflect on career decisions later. He added, “To his credit, he’s reach and shown us that he’s not done.”
Easing the Transition for Mercedes
Coulthard also suggested that Hamilton’s move to Ferrari may have benefited Mercedes, allowing them to transition to a new generation of drivers more easily. “I think he’s made it easier for Mercedes by leaving to go to Ferrari. That would have been tricky for Toto to eventually say, ‘Lewis, we need to move on. We need the next generation.’ So that’s one box ticked in terms of Mercedes being released.”
Hamilton’s Positive Outlook and Future Ambitions
Hamilton himself has expressed a renewed sense of enthusiasm. He described the Chinese Grand Prix as “one of the most enjoyable races I’ve had in years,” praising the wheel-to-wheel battles with his teammate, Charles Leclerc, and the Mercedes drivers. Hamilton shared on social media, “Loved every battle with Charles – we push each other to be better.”
Hamilton acknowledged the team’s progress and congratulated Kimi Antonelli and Mercedes on their victory. He also indicated a desire to continue improving and potentially challenge for championships in the future. As reported by The Guardian, Hamilton stated he feels “back to my best, both mentally and physically.”
Intra-Team Battle with Leclerc
The Chinese Grand Prix saw a fierce competition between Hamilton and his Ferrari teammate, Charles Leclerc. Motorsport.com highlighted the wheel-to-wheel battles throughout the race, ultimately resulting in Hamilton securing third place.
Looking Ahead
With a revitalized mindset and a promising start to the 2026 season, Lewis Hamilton appears determined to continue his Formula 1 career at a high level. His performance in China suggests he is far from “done,” and the prospect of further improvements with Ferrari could lead to even greater success.
