Baerbock Underscores teh United Nations’ Central Role in Global Peace Efforts

On the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock asserted that the creation of a new international organization dedicated to maintaining peace is needless, emphasizing the existing and vital role of the United Nations. Baerbock highlighted the UN’s unique structure, stating, “This is the United Nations, in which, for very, very good reason, all states in the world, regardless of their size, economic or military strength, have a seat and a vote.”

Her comments come amidst scrutiny of former US President Donald Trump’s plans to announce a “Peace Council,” which some critics suggest is intended as an alternative to the UN for addressing global crises and conflicts. Baerbock clarified that the UN Security Council had already assigned the “Peace Council” a specific, temporary mandate concerning the situation in Gaza, operating within the framework of binding international law through UN Security Council resolutions.

Baerbock further stressed the fundamental importance of the UN Charter, describing it not as merely beneficial, but as “existential for peace, security and prosperity.” She argued that the vast majority of nations recognize the international peace order as crucial for their own security and economic well-being.She concluded by stating that a broad coalition of nations must defend the established international rules-based order against attempts to impose power dynamics, emphasizing self-preservation and the need for global regulations to ensure success and development. Trump is scheduled to formally announce his “Peace Council” initiative in Davos.
