Dengue Cases Decline in Loreto, Peru, But Vigilance Remains Key

Loreto, Peru, is experiencing a decrease in dengue cases compared to the previous year, but health officials are maintaining a watchful eye on the situation. As of March 23, 2026, 1,213 cases of dengue have been reported in the region.

Dengue Trends in Loreto

According to epidemiologist Carlos Álvarez Antonio, the current number of cases represents a 55% reduction compared to 2025. This decline follows a significant outbreak in 2024, which was attributed to the introduction of a new dengue virus genotype from the San Martín region.

Progress in Patient Care

The region has made strides in effectively managing dengue cases. In 2024, 158 patients exhibiting signs of dengue alarm were successfully discharged from healthcare facilities after receiving timely care from health professionals. This positive outcome is linked to improved diagnostic capabilities, clinical management, and ongoing surveillance efforts.

Healthcare Worker Training

To bolster its response to dengue, Loreto has invested in training programs for healthcare workers. In 2023, 250 professionals – including doctors, nurses, and technicians – completed dengue management training. This year, an additional 345 professionals from 65 health centers are slated to receive training, with an investment of S/95,000.

Regional Healthcare Infrastructure

Loreto is equipped with seven fever units located in Iquitos, Yurimaguas, and San Lorenzo, and one Clinical Surveillance Unit (Uviclin) in San Lorenzo (Datem del Marañón). The Uviclin has 14 beds and is staffed by five doctors, five nurses, and five technicians working in shifts around the clock.

Current Situation and Control Measures

Despite the decrease in cases, health authorities emphasize that dengue remains under control in Loreto. While some patients are hospitalized, no fatalities have been reported, and widespread fumigation is not currently deemed necessary. In 2025, there were eight deaths due to dengue in Loreto, including six children, one adult, and one elderly person. Sixteen severe cases of dengue were also identified, double the number recorded in the same period of 2024.
