British Independent Diatom Launches Inner Worlds Watch Collection with Near-Space Flights
British independent watchmaker Diatom has introduced the “Inner Worlds” collection, a quintet of 39.5mm timepieces inspired by Mercury, Venus, Earth, the Moon, and Mars. Priced at AUD $4,271 according to Man of Many, or $2,950 as reported by Worn and Wound, each watch incorporates historic spaceflight material or actual meteorite particles. The brand subjects every finished piece to a high-altitude flight exceeding 120,000 feet before delivery.
Hardware Specifications and Near-Space Flight Testing
The Inner Worlds collection utilizes a 316L stainless steel case measuring 39.5mm in diameter with a 48mm lug-to-lug distance, a 9.35mm thickness, and a 20mm lug width, as detailed by Man of Many. Each watch offers 100 meters of water resistance and runs on a Swiss ETA 2892-A2 automatic movement featuring a 42-hour power reserve and a double-domed sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating.
Before reaching buyers, Diatom tests the watches in a thermal vacuum chamber at temperatures dropping to −60°C and pressures approaching zero, according to Worn and Wound. The brand then mounts the watches inside a custom-built carbon-fibre craft equipped with cameras, telemetry gear, and a flight computer. Diatom flight records show a batch of watches reaching 124,927 feet, with external temperatures falling below −65°C and atmospheric pressure dropping below 1 percent of sea level. Once the flight concludes, a satellite uplink triggers a controlled descent, and the flight computer broadcasts coordinates for recovery.
Planetary Inspirations and Interplanetary Material Inclusions
Founded by aerospace engineers Dr. Chris Rose and Dr. Alex Baker, Diatom designs each dial using precision embossing and multiple enamel layers thinner than 10 microns, requiring several days of manual work per dial. The rotor includes Kapton thermal insulation material from Odyssey, the Apollo 13 Command Module.
* Moon: Swaps bright colors for a charcoal-grey, crater-like enamel surface.
* Mars: Utilizes a rust-red dial coated with fine particles from a Martian meteorite. Each model is limited to 450 pieces. While Man of Many lists the retail price at AUD $4,271, Worn and Wound lists the price at $2,950, reflecting regional pricing differences across independent retail channels.
