Digital Payments Transform León Flea Markets, Boosting Sales and Competitiveness
León, Guanajuato – Cash is rapidly becoming less king at León’s bustling flea markets as digital payment methods gain widespread adoption among merchants. The shift, driven by customer demand and the pursuit of increased sales, is reshaping the traditional market experience and fostering a more competitive environment.
The Rise of Electronic Transactions
Merchants are increasingly offering a variety of payment options beyond cash, including bank transfers, credit cards, and debit cards. Many are now displaying signage advertising these new methods, recognizing that adapting to digital payments is no longer optional but essential for business survival.
“There are already several colleagues who use this method. Almost the majority already have their transfer announcement,” says Salvador López, a clothing vendor at one of León’s markets. “Many have joined, and I do recommend it.”
Some vendors have been utilizing Mercado Pago terminals for the past two years, experiencing significant benefits. Ofelia Villanueva, who has sold underwear for over 40 years, reports a sales increase of up to 40% since implementing the terminals. “We provide customers more options, and we do have more advantage over others because we use the terminals. Sometimes they don’t bring cash, and so they don’t just buy one item of clothing from us, but up to two or three,” she explains.
Record Growth in Card Payments Across Mexico
The trend in León mirrors a nationwide surge in electronic payments. According to data from the Bank of Mexico (Banxico), a record 11,261 million card payments were processed between January and December 2025. This represents a 14% increase compared to the 11,261 million payments processed in 2024 [leonapartamentos.com].
The total value of these transactions also reached a historical high of 6.44 billion pesos in 2025, an 11% increase from the 5.8 billion pesos recorded in 2024 [leonapartamentos.com].
New Technologies Facilitate Transactions
Contactless payments via mobile phones and bank transfers are further accelerating the adoption of digital payments, expanding purchasing possibilities for customers. These technologies offer convenience and speed, encouraging more frequent and larger transactions.
Challenges and Considerations
While the benefits are clear, merchants acknowledge challenges such as the risk of fraud and potential delays in deposit confirmations. However, the consensus remains that offering digital payment methods is a positive step for their businesses.
“To have more income because there are more people who use this method of transferring money,” López reiterates.
Staying Competitive in a Digital Age
The experience in León’s markets underscores a critical lesson: businesses that fail to embrace modern payment methods risk falling behind and losing sales. The shift towards digital payments is not merely a technological upgrade. it’s a fundamental change in how commerce is conducted, and those who adapt will be best positioned to thrive.
