Dominion Projects Residential Electric Bills May Climb Up to 57 Percent Over Two Decades
Dominion Energy projects that a typical residential electric bill could rise by more than 57% over the next 20 years under its preferred energy plan, according to an update reported by wtvr.com. Customers currently consuming 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity pay about $180 monthly. Under the utility’s preferred roadmap, that typical monthly bill could reach roughly $258 by 2036 and approach $285 by 2046.
State Regulators Require Calculations Showing Faster Bill Increases
A separate calculation mandated by the State Corporation Commission yields a much steeper financial trajectory for ratepayers. Using that specific regulatory methodology, the utility states that the same residential bill could surpass $458 per month by 2046, representing an increase exceeding 150% compared to current rates. Dominion formally disputes this higher projection in its regulatory filing. The company argues that the alternative methodology fails to account for the additional electricity it expects to sell as regional demand expands over the coming decades.
Comparing Dominion Projections With Prior Utility Filings
The updated long-term forecasts exceed the estimates Dominion submitted in its previous regulatory filing. In the 2025 Integrated Resource Plan update, the company’s preferred strategy anticipated a monthly residential bill of about $255 in 2035 and $267 by 2045. The newly released figures shift those benchmarks upward to approximately $258 in 2036 and nearly $285 by 2046. Company officials emphasize that these figures represent modeling projections rather than officially approved rate hikes, as all future utility rates remain subject to formal review and authorization by state regulators.

October 2027 Brings the Next Full Integrated Resource Plan Update
Future electricity rates and capacity buildouts depend heavily on regulatory decisions tied to ongoing long-term planning cycles. Dominion’s next full Integrated Resource Plan update is scheduled for release in October 2027.
