After harsh losses in the previous days, especially in tech stocks, investors sent prices in New York up just as quickly at the end of the week. A firmer opening resulted in a real recovery rally. For the first time, the leading index Dow Jones broke the 50,000 point mark.
The Dow recently gained more than 1,000 points, or around 2.2 percent, but was just below this milestone. The market-wide S&P 500 rose by 1.7 percent. The Nasdaq 100, which primarily includes tech stocks, rose by 1.8 percent.
The noticeably better development in the Dow on Friday is no coincidence. Recently, investors have been trying harder to distinguish potential winners and losers from the AI boom. They are also increasingly questioning billion-dollar investments in the new megatrend. The standard stocks, which are more strongly represented in the Dow with index members such as Boeing, Coca-Cola and Walmart, have therefore been in a better position in the past few days than the technology stocks that are so important in the USA. Precious metals and Bitcoin are also on the recovery path
While the Dow is heading for a weekly gain of 2.3 percent, its US index colleagues S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 are still in the red for the week.
The recovery wasn’t just limited to stocks. Gold and silver also rose noticeably in price again after extreme losses exactly a week ago. Silver recently gained almost 15 percent, although the losses of the past few days are far from being offset. The cryptocurrency Bitcoin climbed back above the 70,000 point mark after the price temporarily fell to around $60,000.
Unlike the stock markets, Bitcoin has been in a downward trend for several months. If nervousness grows among investors, both stocks and Bitcoin usually lose out, as both are riskier investments and are now highly correlated. However, precious metals also fell this week at the same time as prices on the stock markets, although gold and silver are traditionally more of a port of call for investors who want to withdraw from risky assets.
