Strandings at Egmond aan Zee

Dozens of large jellyfish, some measuring up to 35 centimeters across, washed ashore on the beach at Egmond aan Zee on Wednesday, hartvannederland.nl reported. Wildlife photographer Sjef Kenniphaas documented the stranded marine animals during the afternoon. While the jellyfish are dead, beachgoers entering the water during the current warm autumn weather need to remain cautious, according to local authorities. Kenniphaas noted that such strandings happen more often, yet still produce a striking sight.

Easterly winds and warm weather drive creatures ashore

An easterly wind drove the marine creatures toward the coastline by generating a strong undertow, beach supervisor Marco Snijders explained to hartvannederland.nl. Unseasonably warm temperatures reaching 26 degrees Celsius are contributing to the environmental conditions along the Dutch coast, prompting Snijders to state: It is 26 degrees, that is not normal for this time of year. Snijders noted that such coastal occurrences are not unusual for the area, pointing to recent strandings of starfish and squid foam in the preceding weeks across various stretches of the shoreline. Multiple species of jellyfish have been spotted along the entire coast according to him.

Toxicity Risks During High Tide

However, hazards remain once the incoming tide reaches the animals and they are carried away by the seawater again. The stinging cells located within the tentacles continue to contain compounds capable of triggering a burning sensation on human skin even after the organism has died.

Common Questions About the Jellyfish Stranding

Why did the jellyfish wash ashore?

An persistent easterly wind created an underwater current that pushed multiple species of jellyfish directly onto the Egmond aan Zee coastline.

Are the stranded jellyfish dangerous to touch?

Beachgoers do not need to fear the dead specimens on the dry sand, but extra vigilance is required once the tide returns, as the tentacles can still cause a burning sensation on the skin.

Is this type of marine stranding rare in the Netherlands?

Local beach supervisor Marco Snijders stated that such events happen regularly, noting that starfish and squid foam frequently wash ashore under similar weather conditions.
