Driving Changes May Signal Early Dementia, Study Finds
Subtle shifts in driving behavior could serve as an early warning sign of cognitive decline and potential dementia, according to recent research. A study involving older adults found a link between changes in driving patterns and indicators of brain damage associated with dementia.
Study Details and Findings
The research, conducted in St. Louis, Missouri, tracked 220 cognitively healthy volunteers aged 65 and over. Participants’ driving habits were monitored using sensors installed in their vehicles. Simultaneously, participants underwent brain MRI scans to measure white matter hyperintensities – areas of damage caused by reduced blood flow – which are known to be associated with dementia and cognitive decline.
