Wilfreta Baugh: A Lifelong Dedication to the Philadelphia Flower Show

Wilfreta Baugh is currently serving as the chair of the 2026 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show, marking her 54th year of participation in the event. Her involvement spans decades, beginning in 1974 and reflects a deep passion for horticulture and community engagement.

A Longstanding Commitment to Horticulture

Baugh’s dedication to the Philadelphia Flower Show is remarkable. She has consistently exhibited at the show yearly from 1974 until 2018, even while pursuing medical school, completing her residency, and practicing medicine. Beyond the Philadelphia Flower Show, she has also exhibited at WAFA and other national shows, and has had her interpretive designs featured in museums.

Our Garden Club of Philadelphia & Vicinity

Wilfreta Baugh is a longtime member of Our Garden Club of Philadelphia and Vicinity, the country’s oldest continuously active African-American garden club, founded in March of 1939. The club, comprised of 29 members, fosters a vibrant community through monthly lectures, and workshops. Members also host their own Flower Show every other year, and frequently participate in the competitive classes at the Philadelphia Flower Show.

Beyond the Flower Show: A Life of Service

Baugh’s contributions extend beyond the horticultural world. She joined the PHS Board in January of 2021. She is also a volunteer at Emlen School, where she has tutored students in reading and math and served as an artistic mentor. Prior to her medical career, she taught Mathematics and chaired the Mathematics Department at Cooke Junior High School in Philadelphia.

A Distinguished Career

Dr. Baugh holds degrees from Hampton University (Chemistry and Math), Penn State (Meteorology), Jefferson Medical College, and completed her residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Internal Medicine. She practiced medicine from 1981 to 2013. She is a mother of two, a grandmother of seven, and is expecting to become a great-grandmother.

In January 2025, Wilfreta Baugh showcased her floral arrangements at her Elkins Park home.
