Drogheda United Hit with Fine and Away Supporter Ban Following Oriel Park Incident
Drogheda United has been sanctioned by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) following incidents of fan misbehavior during a Premier Division clash against Dundalk FC at Oriel Park on February 20, 2026. The sanctions include a €15,000 fine and a ban on away supporters for four upcoming matches, as well as a prohibition on attending fixtures at Oriel Park for the remainder of the 2026 season.
Incident Details
The disciplinary action stems from the throwing of flares onto the pitch during the Louth derby, resulting in damage to the newly relaid artificial surface at Oriel Park. A 12-year-old child was also injured, sustaining burns to the face from a flare [RTE]. Prior to the match, clashes also occurred between fans outside the stadium.
Sanctions Imposed
The FAI’s Independent Disciplinary Committee determined the sanctions necessary given the severity of the incident. Drogheda United will be unable to bring supporters to their next four away games against Sligo Rovers (March 7), St Patrick’s Athletic (March 13), Derry City (March 20), and Waterford (April 10) [Irish Times]. Drogheda United has accepted the sanctions and pledged to cover the full cost of the pitch repairs at Oriel Park. Despite the sanctions, Drogheda United, currently unbeaten this season, is scheduled to play Shelbourne at home tonight.
