Dyson’s PencilWash: A New Era in Compact Wet Cleaning

Dyson continues to innovate in the home cleaning space, building on the success of its ultra-compact Clean+Wash Hygiene and PencilVac with the newly unveiled Dyson PencilWash. This latest device combines the streamlined design of the PencilVac with the efficient mopping technology of the Clean+Wash Hygiene, offering a lightweight and maneuverable solution for hard floor cleaning.

Compact Design and Lightweight Build

One of the most striking features of the PencilWash is its size. Unlike many wet-and-dry vacuums that are bulky and heavy, the PencilWash boasts an incredibly svelte design. The core technology, including the motor, is miniaturized to fit inside the 1.5-inch (38mm) handle. The battery clips onto the handle, and the water tanks are integrated directly into the floorhead.

This design results in a unit that is comparable in size to a traditional broom, weighing in at 4.9lbs (2.2kg). Dyson has strategically positioned most of the weight in the floorhead, reducing the perceived weight in the user’s hand to approximately 0.8lbs (0.38kg).

Despite its compact size, the water tanks are capable of cleaning up to 100 square meters per fill, thanks to Dyson’s meticulous water distribution system. TechRadar reports that John Churchill, Dyson’s Chief Technology Officer, emphasized the company’s commitment to creating smaller, lighter machines without compromising performance.

Hygienic Cleaning and Maneuverability

The PencilWash’s design also addresses hygiene concerns. By positioning the wastewater tank within the floorhead, the need for long tubing is minimized, reducing the risk of blockages and unpleasant odors. Dyson highlights that the PencilWash requires no filter.

Maneuverability is another key benefit. The broom-like handle allows for effortless steering, and the device can pivot smoothly with a twist of the wrist. The PencilWash can also lie nearly flat, pivoting to 170 degrees and reaching a height of just 5.9 inches (15cm) – enabling it to easily clean under furniture.

Availability and Pricing

The Dyson PencilWash is available for purchase in the US starting March 17th and in the UK starting February 23rd. The list price is $349 in the US and £299.99 in the UK. Australian availability and pricing have not yet been announced.
