The Philadelphia Eagles signed former Dallas Cowboys running back Jaydon Blue to their practice squad, according to an ESPN report by Adam Schefter on Monday, August 31, 2026. Blue cleared waivers after the Dallas Cowboys released him during final roster cuts ahead of the 2026 NFL season, allowing the 22-year-old to join Philadelphia’s developmental roster.
Jaydon Blue’s Background and Draft Profile
The Dallas Cowboys selected Blue in the fifth round with the No. 149 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft out of the University of Texas. Measuring 5-foot-9 and 198 pounds, Blue drew attention during the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine by running a 4.38-second time in the 40-yard dash, marking the second-fastest time for a running back in Indianapolis that year. During his rookie season in Dallas, Blue appeared in five games, recording 38 rushing attempts for 129 yards and one touchdown, along with one reception for five yards.

During his final collegiate season at Texas in 2024, Blue rushed for 730 yards and eight touchdowns on a 5.4 yards-per-carry average, while adding 42 catches for 368 yards and six receiving touchdowns. According to an evaluation by The Athletic’s Dane Brugler during the 2025 pre-draft process, Blue stood out as a pass-catching weapon out of the backfield, leading all FBS running backs with six receiving touchdowns. However, scouts also noted that he needed to develop consistency in traffic and ball security after fumbling once every 25 touches during his final college season.
Preseason Performance and Eagles Roster Fit
During the 2026 preseason with Dallas, Blue rushed 23 times for 94 yards, including a 75-yard performance on 15 carries against the Arizona Cardinals, alongside two catches for 15 yards and kickoff return duties. The Eagles opened the 2026 regular season carrying Saquon Barkley, Tank Bigsby, and Will Shipley on their active 53-man roster. Blue joins a practice squad that also features running backs Dameon Pierce and Carson Steele. While Pierce and Steele offer power running styles and physical profiles suited for short yardage, NBC Sports Philadelphia noted that Blue provides an explosive, speedy, and elusive skill set tailored for the passing game.
