Italy Faces Early Summer Heatwave: Temperatures to Soar 7°C Above Average
Italy is bracing for an intense period of high temperatures as a significant heatwave begins to impact the country. Forecasters at iLMeteo.it report that the nation will experience a thermal anomaly, with temperatures climbing 6-7°C above the seasonal average throughout the coming week.
A Shift Toward Summer Conditions
The heatwave is expected to intensify rapidly over the next few days. By Sunday, several regions—particularly across the Center and North—will see temperatures typical of mid-summer. Cities such as La Spezia are projected to reach 32°C, while much of the Po Valley, Tuscany, Sardinia, and the Lazio region, including Rome, are expected to see highs near 31°C.
The peak of this weather event is forecasted for Wednesday, May 27. Meteorologists have identified a “hot triangle” spanning lower Piedmont, Emilia, and eastern Lombardy. Cities including Piacenza, Cremona, and Mantova could see temperatures hit 35°C, while Alessandria, Asti, Florence, Grosseto, Modena, and Pavia are expected to reach 34°C.
The Role of the African Anticyclone
This early-season heat is driven by an African anticyclone. Interestingly, its atmospheric center is currently positioned over the English Channel, from where it is extending toward Italy. This positioning directs scorching air primarily toward the country’s central and northern regions, resulting in higher temperatures in the north compared to the south.

Potential Weather Shifts
Looking toward the latter half of next week, meteorological models suggest a potential shift. An influx of cooler air from the Balkans may collide with the warm, humid air currently building across the peninsula. This instability could trigger strong thunderstorms, particularly in central and southern areas, potentially leading to a pattern of sunny mornings followed by stormy afternoons.
Health and Safety Recommendations
Because this is the first significant heatwave of the year, health experts warn that the human body has not yet had sufficient time to acclimatize to high temperatures. To mitigate risks during this period, consider the following precautions:
- Prioritize Vulnerable Groups: Older adults are particularly susceptible to sudden temperature fluctuations. Ensure they stay in cool environments and remain well-hydrated.
- Sun Protection: The solar intensity at the end of May is comparable to that of late July. Use high-SPF sunscreen, especially for children.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Limit Exposure: Avoid direct sunlight and strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest hours of the day.
While the sudden arrival of summer-like conditions can be challenging, taking these proactive steps is essential to staying safe during this early-season heat event.
