Ari Aster’s ‘Eddington’ Arrives on DVD and Blu-ray, Streaming Options Available
Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal star in Ari Aster’s provocative neo-Western thriller, now available for home viewing.
Following the release of his demanding horror films, Hereditary and Midsommar, director Ari Aster continued to challenge audiences with Beau Is Afraid. Now, Aster presents Eddington, a blend of neo-Western, satirical thriller, and drama that tackles complex themes such as the COVID-19 pandemic, social media surveillance, and performative outrage. The film, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal, debuted in theaters and is now available on DVD, Blu-ray, and streaming platforms as of March 6, 2026.
About ‘Eddington’
Set in Eddington, New Mexico, in May 2020, the film centers on a conflict between Sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix) and Mayor Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal). Sheriff Cross favors a relaxed approach to COVID-19 restrictions, while Mayor Garcia insists on strict adherence to lockdown measures, social distancing, and mask mandates. This disagreement escalates when Sheriff Cross decides to challenge Mayor Garcia in the upcoming mayoral election.
The film also explores the personal struggles of Sheriff Cross, dealing with his wife Louise (Emma Stone) and her conspiracy-theorist mother Dawn (Deirdre O’Connell). Adding to the tension, the town experiences protests and unsettling events that further ignite the already volatile atmosphere. The cast also includes Austin Butler, Luke Grimes, and Clifton Collins Jr.
A Film Designed to Provoke
Originally conceived as Aster’s directorial debut, Eddington faced funding challenges due to its ambitious scope. Years later, with the success of his previous films, Aster secured a $25 million budget to bring his vision to life. The film aims to capture the division within American society, particularly as it manifested during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Aster intentionally avoids taking a definitive stance, presenting multiple perspectives and challenging viewers to confront uncomfortable truths. The film’s narrative structure is deliberately uneven, with a 149-minute runtime and tonal shifts designed to disorient and provoke thought.
