N. A. Ngom was remanded in custody on Nov. 5 after appearing before the public prosecutor at the Pikine-Guédiawaye court, accused of threatening to cut open the stomach of her pregnant sister-in-law during a domestic dispute in Thiaroye.
Prosecutors are holding Ngom on charges of violence and assault against a vulnerable person because of the pregnancy, death threats, and public insults against her sister-in-law, F. Sarr. The dispute erupted Oct. 30 around 6 p.m. over the division of household chores, and Sarr filed a complaint against her brother-in-law, L. Ndiaye, and his wife at the Thiaroye territorial police station, alleging insults, death threats, and harassment. Relations between the two households have been strained for four years, and a previous disagreement had already resulted in violence against Sarr.
The Oct. 30 Confrontation in Thiaroye
According to the complainant, the exchange with Ngom quickly escalated, and Sarr called her husband. When L. Ndiaye arrived, he insulted his pregnant sister-in-law, calling her a “whore.” Ngom then allegedly threatened to cut open Sarr’s stomach with a knife to extract her baby. Sarr claims to have recorded part of the conversation.
Two witnesses interviewed by police corroborated her accusations. Mr. Dione said he personally heard Ngom declare that she could kill Sarr without difficulty. AM Ndiaye, the stepfather of the two women, also said he heard death threats during a family gathering.
Conciliation Fails as Insults Continue
Gendarmes conducted a conciliation session on Nov. 2, but Ngom persisted in her insults, calling her sister-in-law an illegitimate child.
Ngom Admits to the Altercation
When questioned about the incident, Ngom admitted to the altercation, which she attributed to disagreements over household chores and her sister-in-law’s children. Her husband, L. Ndiaye, maintained that he only intervened to calm the two women.
Ngom remains in custody following the Nov. 5 court appearance, while Sarr’s claim that she recorded part of the confrontation has not been independently confirmed in the report.
