French High School Closures And Nationwide Protests Force Government Response

France faces widespread school disruptions as 400 to 500 high schools prepare to suspend classes partially or completely following days of intense urban violence and student-led protests. National Education Minister Édouard Geffray announced the closures, noting that at least 24 high schools have been vandalized or set on fire while 78 education personnel have sustained injuries during the demonstrations.

The unrest stems from student mobilization that began in mid-September across the Paris region before spreading nationwide. Demonstrators are demanding improved material conditions in schools, increased financial and human resources, and the elimination of pressure linked to the Parcoursup university admission system. However, demonstrations have also seen fringe elements introduce antisemitic, anti-police, and pro-Palestinian slogans, particularly in locations such as Carpentras in the Vaucluse department.

Mass Arrests And Ultra-Left Infiltration Cited By Officials

Law enforcement agencies have arrested more than 5,000 individuals since the demonstrations intensified, including over 1,700 arrests recorded on Friday alone. Minors account for 85 percent of all detained individuals, according to government figures.

Minister Geffray stated that school closures are enforced strictly when safety conditions are compromised due to property damage or direct threats against staff. He accused militant ultra-left groups and proxies of La France insoumise of infiltrating the student movement. Geffray asserted that these external actors hijacked the protests from students and engaged in extreme violence that endangered both teachers and pupils. Manuel Bompard, coordinator for La France insoumise, faced these government accusations during a joint appearance on France Inter and France 2.
