Electronic Arts Closes BioWare After 31 Years and Cuts 400 Jobs
Electronic Arts has closed the Canadian video game developer BioWare after 31 years of operation, eliminating up to 400 jobs across the company as part of a major corporate restructuring, the BBC reported. The studio, founded in 1995, produced role-playing classics including the first two Baldur’s Gate titles, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series.
The closure comes just months after an investor group led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, alongside Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, acquired Electronic Arts in a 55 milliárd dolláros transaction that closed in August, according to reporting by HVG. As part of that deal, the parent company assumed 20 milliárd dollárnyi debt that it must pay back, a financial pressure that preceded the studio’s shuttering and the cancellation of the fifth Mass Effect game.
Cancelled Mass Effect 5 Development and Staff Reactions
The shutdown halted production on the next installment in the Mass Effect franchise, a project that had been in development for five years. While the parent company opted to scrap the title, writers who worked on the game have pushed back against assumptions about its quality.
Fantasy and sci-fi author Catherynne M. Valente posted on X that the team was working on a great game, stating they had figured out how to make it, IGN Hungary reported. Sci-fi author Derek Künsken, who spent five years writing for the project, added that the collaboration on the story and characters was one of the best he had experienced. Tony de Waal, who joined BioWare over 29 years ago and worked on cinematic transitions, revealed on LinkedIn that a team of roughly 50 developers was left on the project after Dragon Age: The Veilguard, drawing inspiration from recent genre benchmarks like Baldur’s Gate 3 to give players unprecedented narrative autonomy.
We did figure it out. We were working on a great game. Just saying. https://t.co/6BBjeIiK6B
Industry Fallout and Historic Legacy
The loss of the Edmonton-based studio sent shockwaves through the gaming industry, drawing public mourning from rival developers and creators. CD Projekt joint CEO Michał Nowakowski expressed sorrow on social media, recalling how BioWare assisted the young Polish studio by loaning its Aurora Engine for the original The Witcher, sharing industry wisdom, and hosting them at E3.
Throughout its history, BioWare transformed computer role-playing games by blending deep branching narratives with cinematic action. However, the studio also weathered commercial missteps, most notably the 2019 multiplayer misfire Anthem, alongside recent development challenges on the Frostbite engine during Dragon Age: The Veilguard. While the game studio itself has been dissolved and its upcoming titles shelved, reports indicate that the television adaptation based on the Mass Effect universe remains active, according to IGN Hungary.
