Elfsborg and Malmö FF Play Out Scoreless Draw in Borås

Elfsborg and Malmö FF played out a scoreless 0–0 draw at Borås Arena on October 23, 2026, dropping further behind in the race for European qualification. Media reports said the match was marked by few clear goal chances and a late scuffle on the sidelines between Malmö captain Anders Christiansen and Elfsborg coach Björn Hamberg. The result leaves Elfsborg in fifth place in the table, four points behind Hammarby in the last European spot, who have played one fewer match. Meanwhile, Malmö FF sits seventh in the standings following the stalemate.

Touchline Confrontation Erupts Between Christiansen and Hamberg

The match threatened to boil over in the 76th minute when Malmö midfielder Anders Christiansen brought down Elfsborg right-back Alexander Jensen with a late tackle. The challenge immediately drew the ire of Elfsborg coach Björn Hamberg, who started shouting from the sideline for a caution.

Christiansen responded by shouting back and walking toward the Elfsborg technical area, prompting players from both sides to rush to the scene and spark a larger melee. Match referee Granit Maqedonci issued a yellow card to Christiansen for the challenge, though Hamberg argued post-match that the punishment should have been more severe.

“It was a foul tackle, and you could see a long way off that he was going to make it,” Hamberg told Sportbladet, as cited by SVT Nyheter. “It’s a pity when a player gets kicked down. But he got a yellow card and probably thought it wasn’t a caution. I thought it was pretty clear-cut.”

Malmö teammate Gabriel Busanello eventually intervened to pull Christiansen away from the touchline to allow the match to resume. Speaking after the final whistle, Christiansen declined to dwell on the confrontation.

“I’ve said many times that what happens on the pitch stays on the pitch,” Christiansen told Aftonbladet. “I’d rather stand and talk about football.”

Elfsborg defender Niklas Hult voiced his frustration over Christiansen’s reaction toward the coaching staff after the match.

“He kicks down Jensen and then I don’t know why he has to stand and argue with Björn,” Hult told Aftonbladet. “I think that’s damn unnecessary. It’s better that he argues with Jensen instead. But we marked out pretty well and he had to back down.”

Scant Scoring Chances Define Borås Arena Encounter

Before the late-game flashpoint, attacking quality was scarce on both ends of the pitch. Elfsborg appealed for a penalty in the first half when Momoh Kamara went down in a duel with Malmö’s Gabriel Busanello, but TV4 expert Simon Thern dismissed the appeals on broadcast, stating, “No penalty, it’s a little push.”

Malmö managed very little offensive output throughout the 90 minutes. Christiansen recorded the visitor’s only shot on target early in the second half with a weak effort toward goal. Elfsborg kom närmast ett mål i andra halvlek genom inhopparen Ari Sigurpalsson, som ersatte en skadad Sead Haksabanovic men inte fick bollen i nät. In the game’s closing minutes, Elfsborg registered their only two shots on target, forcing Malmö goalkeeper Robin Olsen into a pair of crucial saves.

“In that phase of the match, it feels very good,” Olsen told Aftonbladet regarding his late interventions. Malmö head coach Gaute Helstrup admitted the performance fell short of expectations.

“No, I had hoped that we would score and that they wouldn’t score,” Helstrup told Aftonbladet. “But it was an even match overall.”

Elfsborg and Malmö Trail Top-Three Contenders

The single point leaves both clubs with ground to make up in the final stretch of the league season. With Elfsborg in fifth place and Malmö in seventh place, it was noted that top-three contenders Djurgården and Hammarby could extend their margins to seven and eight points ahead of Elfsborg in the table.
