Three Thematic Numerical Movements of the Production
The production is structured around three specific numerical concepts associated with the artifact, dividing the performance into distinct thematic movements. According to the organizing body, the show begins with the square root of two (“√2”), representing the bell’s architectural proportions in Part 1 (“Birth”). Part 2 (“Resonance”) utilizes the frequency “64Hz” to signify the deep, sustained acoustic vibrations of the bronze instrument. Part 3 (“Aspiration”) references the year “771,” marking the historical completion date of the bell and connecting ancient communal wishes to modern life.
In the opening movement, the narrative focuses on the physical creation of the artifact through fire, earth, and metal. Sēnghuáng player Han Ji-su uses the breath-controlled harmonies of the traditional reed instrument to evoke the labor of artisans forging the bronze mold, complete with its lotus and flying apsaras patterns, according to production details.
Acoustic Exploration and Modern Resonance
The second movement explores the physics of sound generation as vibrations travel through metal and air. Yanggeum player Yoon Eun-hwa strikes the metal strings of the traditional hammered dulcimer to replicate the bell’s powerful resonance, layering different instrument timbres to expand the acoustic experience.
The final movement shifts toward the cultural aspirations embedded in the historical object. According to the foundation, the crossover ensemble Sŏdo Band bridges traditional sounds with contemporary popular music to channel the ancient prayers for peace and safety into a modern context.
