France’s Resistance to Career Reinvention in the Age of AI

As jobs and qualifications face threats from artificial intelligence (AI), questioning how careers are redefined is crucial.

France maintains a strong tradition of favoring linear career paths, while it should be fostering cognitive agility and continuous reinvention in its workforce.

An examination of approximately 600 professional trajectories over a decade reveals a stark division into four groups: a large majority of cautious individuals with primarily horizontal or vertical mobility; a smaller group of expatriates in Europe, the United States, or Asia, exhibiting a more audacious but still largely linear pattern; a third quartile representing heroic individuals who successfully reinvented themselves into broader roles, taking genuine risks; and a final group characterized by radical life changes, frequently enough enabled by financial stability. This last group consists exclusively of women for whom family expatriation is a viable option.

Thus,France remains remarkably conservative, reinventing itself slowly due to a widespread attachment to comfort zones. However, Human Resources (HR) departments should encourage individuals to explore and pursue new intellectual challenges.

“Shift” of skills

This slow movement partially explains our difficulty in transforming habits, norms, and models. We readily adopt ideas conceived by others – often Americans, and likely, in the future, increasingly by the Chinese.
