England Captain Breaks Ashes Drought in Australia

Not even ben Stokes’ mix-up with Root – the England skipper was run-out for 19 by a direct hit from Josh Inglis at point – could veer the visitors off course.

“The fact that he could put that out and score the hundred today just shows what a class act he is,” said Crawley, whose knock of 76 set the tone for the visitors.

“We were nervous for him for a long while before that. He was less nervous than us. It was a great moment. He’s so humble and not trying to make a big deal of it. I’m sure inside he’s delighted.”

Mitchell Starc‘s outstanding start to the Ashes continued with figures of 6-71 off 19 overs and the distinction of becoming the most prolific left-arm fast bowler in Test history, trumping Wasim Akram’s long-standing tally of 415 wickets. Not that he thinks he’s in the same class.

“I’ll reflect on it later,” Starc said. “Wasim is still a far better bowler than I am.”

Starc backed up his 10-wicket haul in the first Test with more first-over brilliance on thursday to remove Ben Duckett for a golden duck, but a century stand from Crawley and Root dragged England away from first day humiliation after winning the toss and batting at the Gabba.Australia lacked variety without the spin of Nathan Lyon as england batted more overs on one day in Brisbane than they did in an entire Test in Perth.

Root has been getting peppered everywhere he goes about his failure to take off his helmet in Australia. By the time he did, with a little kiss on the badge, a shrug back towards the dressing room was an understated celebration for a player who will now finally get the credit he deserves in Australia.

The likes of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Lyon have long had Root’s measure in Australia, but none had the pink ball on an opening night at the Gabba, where England relied on their most dangerous weapon more than ever. Without Root, the tourists woudl have been in dire straits.

In his 30th Test innings on Australian soil – having reached 50 nine times with a previous best of 89 – Root broke the shackles some 4396 days after his first attempt 16 Tests ago. His hundred would not have come had Steve Smith not grassed a tough diving chance at second slip when Root was on two.

After a rotten run, he was entitled to a slice of luck.

“I’m sure he’d be relieved to get that 100,” Starc said. “He played fantastically well today and assessed the conditions, sucked up some pressure, and got the result by the end of the day.

“We blazed away a little bit at the end with a soft ball and we sit here pretty even.”

Mitchell Starc Dominates as Australia Strikes early in Brisbane Test

Mitchell Starc continued his exceptional form with the ball, claiming six wickets on the first day of the second Ashes Test at the Gabba in Brisbane, as England struggled to 288 all out. Starc’s early breakthroughs put Australia in a strong position, delighting a crowd of 37,117.

Starc has been remarkably consistent in taking wickets with the new ball, and his recent performances have been particularly potent. He struck with the very first ball of the innings, dismissing Ben Duckett for a golden duck after an edge to Marnus Labuschagne at first slip.

this latest wicket extended Starc’s notable record; he has now taken a wicket in the first over of a Test innings 26 times, surpassing England’s Jimmy Anderson (19) and Kemar Roach (10). He has also claimed a first-over wicket in all three innings of this Ashes series. From the final test of the Caribbean tour to Thursday’s play, Starc has taken 6 wickets across his first four overs of each innings.

England’s decision to bat first appeared to backfire quickly, slumping to 2-5. Ollie Pope was bowled by Starc, falling short of his stated intention to avoid loose shots outside off stump. Starc then overtook Wasim Akram to move into 16th place on the all-time list of Test wicket-takers, and ninth amongst all fast bowlers.

A 117-run partnership between Joe Root and Zak Crawley offered some resistance for England. Crawley, who was dropped by Pat Cummins on 39 and possibly edged on 15 (a decision not reviewed by Australia), top-scored with 76 off 93 balls before being dismissed by Michael Neser. Root remained steady, contributing to England’s highest partnership of the series so far.

Harry Brook’s aggressive approach led to his dismissal for 31, caught behind off Starc. Root continued to build his innings, reaching 89 not out as England closed on 288 all out.

The day highlighted Starc’s dominance and raised concerns for England’s batting lineup, with former captain michael Vaughan expressing his dismay at the early onslaught.
