Enilive, a subsidiary of Italian energy major Eni, has introduced a temporary price cap on fuel prices across Italy, setting maximum rates of 2.19 euros per liter for diesel and 1.99 euros per liter for gasoline, including highway service stations. The initiative runs for 30 days starting September 28, following a government adjustment to fuel excise duties.
Fuel Price Caps and Market Mechanics
The newly introduced price ceiling reduces current average fuel costs by approximately 17 cents per liter at participating Enilive pumps. Unlike standard promotional campaigns that offer fluctuating promotional discounts, this measure establishes a fixed maximum price declared directly at the pump. The implementation coincides with an executive-level tax overhaul on fuel excises that takes effect on September 26, which includes a scheduled tax increase specifically targeting diesel.
Potential Extension Timeline Through 2026
Eni has indicated that the temporary price cap could remain in place longer than initially scheduled. According to company statements, the measure may be extended through the end of 2026, depending on broader market conditions and supply trends.
