A Cabinet Reshuffle Amid Criminal Allegations
Ercolano Mayor Antonietta Garzia announced a sweeping overhaul of her municipal executive board on Friday, a move triggered by the emergence of a video showing local Democratic Party (PD) figures at an electoral event alongside individuals linked to local criminal clans. The cabinet reshuffle is a direct attempt to insulate the local government from potential organized crime infiltration and stave off the appointment of a state-led access commission.
Resignations and the New Guard
The cabinet change follows the self-suspension of prominent PD officials, including former party secretary Antonello Cozzolino and former city councilor Marco Cozzolino, both of whom were identified in the footage. Mayor Garzia described the new lineup as the product of a “serious and constructive” dialogue with majority political forces, aimed at prioritizing the city’s interests through collective governance.
The newly appointed executive team includes:
- Maria Grazia Prillo: Deputy Mayor, responsible for youth policies and equal opportunities.
- Valentino Antonetti: Budget.
- Pasquale Vitiello: Mobility and maritime affairs.
- Luisa Liguoro: Tourism and culture.
- Loredana Gargiulio: Education, representing the Five Star Movement (M5S).
- Aniello Terracciano: Welfare and social policies.
- Nunzio Spina: Security.
A Defensive Vigilance Committee
To bolster institutional integrity, Garzia has established a “guarantee and vigilance” pool tasked with monitoring municipal activities for criminal interference. The committee is comprised of figures with long histories of combating organized crime:
- Nino Daniele: Former Mayor of Ercolano, a period marked by merchant activism and law enforcement efforts that led to something like 800 arrests and other convictions between 2010 and 2026.
- Paolo Siani: Brother of Giancarlo Siani, the journalist murdered by the Camorra in 1985.
- Antonio Borrelli: Former police commissioner (questore).
- Sandro Ruotolo: Member of the European Parliament.
The Shadow of the Ministry of the Interior
The formation of this body serves as a defensive bulwark against the potential arrival of a government commission of access.
The controversy centers on footage capturing local PD leadership at a gathering attended by affiliates of the Suarino clan, a group close to the Ascione-Papale syndicate. The Direzione Distrettuale Antimafia (DDA) of Naples has acquired the video for further investigation. While the local PD branch has been placed under external commissionership, officials from the Ministry of the Interior continue to monitor the situation to determine if further administrative intervention is required to safeguard the municipality’s autonomy.
