Tele2 Modernizes Latvian Mobile Network and Prepares for Finalizing Infrastructure Upgrades
Tele2 installed 39 new base stations and modernized 111 existing ones across various regions of Latvia during the first nine months of the year, db.lv reported. The infrastructure work brings the company close to completing a multi-year network upgrade phase that aims to shift all base stations to 5G technology and expand high-speed data capacity.
The network overhaul follows the retirement of the legacy 3G network, which allowed Tele2 to reallocate the 900 MHz frequency band to strengthen its 4G coverage and indoor signal stability. According to Tele2 technical director Līga Krūmiņa, the engineering work has delivered a more than threefold increase in download speeds over recent years, allowing the infrastructure to handle rising data traffic while supporting next-generation digital services.
Engineering Upgrades and Voice Technology Improvements
With the final base stations scheduled for completion soon, 5G technology will operate across the entire Tele2 network infrastructure in Latvia. Krūmiņa noted that subsequent development steps focus on increasing capacity in areas experiencing the highest surges in data demand and eliminating remaining coverage gaps.
Alongside mobile data enhancements, the network transition introduced widespread support for Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology. The protocol enables immediate call connections, crystal-clear high-definition (HD) voice quality, and simultaneous high-speed internet usage during phone conversations.
