Radioactive Contamination Detected at Koeberg
Eskom has confirmed three radiological contamination incidents at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station’s Unit 2 between June 30 and July 7, 2024. The utility reports that the low-level contamination remained contained within the reactor building, posing no threat to the public or the environment. According to the utility, strict safety protocols were enforced throughout the period, ensuring no radioactive material escaped the facility.
Life-Extension Project Remains Unaffected
Eskom officials stated that these containment incidents have not altered the regulator’s oversight process. The technical viability of the life-extension project remains unchanged.
Extradition Looming for British-Zimbabwean National
In a separate development, 45-year-old Ndodana Mkhanyisi Tshuma remains in custody following his July 10, 2024, arrest in Johannesburg. Tshuma appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court, where his case was postponed to verify his legal status and residential address.
South African police arrested Tshuma after discovering an unlicensed 9mm firearm in his possession. Beyond this local charge, Tshuma is wanted in the United Kingdom for the murders of his wife and two daughters. The Department of Justice is currently processing a provisional extradition request from the UK government. He is expected to face the local firearm charges before any extradition proceedings move forward.
Violence and Alleged Assassinations in Matlala Trial
The High Court in Johannesburg continues to hear the trial of alleged criminal kingpin Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and his four co-accused. The group faces 25 charges, including three counts of attempted assassination spanning from 2022 to 2024.
The indictment involves the alleged targeting of taxi industry figure Joe “Ferrari” Sibanyoni, Tebogo Thobejane, and DJ Vettys. During recent testimony, security officer Bethwell Cele described the attack on Sibanyoni. Cele told the court that gunmen armed with AK-47 rifles targeted Sibanyoni and his security detail at a golf estate, noting that the assailants also fired shots at him during the encounter. The trial is ongoing, with the State’s first witness scheduled for further cross-examination.
