EU Boosts Support for Border Regions Near Russia, Belarus and Ukraine

The European Commission has unveiled a comprehensive strategy to bolster security and resilience in EU regions bordering Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine. This initiative aims to address the unique challenges faced by these areas, which have become increasingly vulnerable since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

A Shift in Focus: Before and After February 2022

Prior to the war in Ukraine, these border regions were characterized by cross-border shopping, tourism, and normal daily life. Still, the conflict has fundamentally altered their role, transforming them into critical areas for security, logistics, and emergency support European Commission. Nine Member States Affected

The strategy focuses on nine EU member states: Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria Baltic Times. • People: Improving access to quality services, education, healthcare, and support for youth, as well as strengthening community preparedness.

Addressing Key Challenges
