European Gas Prices Surge to Highest Level Since 2022
European natural gas prices have breached 90 euros per megawatt-hour, reaching levels not seen since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, bnnvara reported. The sharp climb follows reduced deliveries from the Middle East, driven by the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing military actions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
The squeeze on international energy markets is immediately reshaping household budgets across the Netherlands as the heating season begins. Households face higher rates across fixed, variable, and dynamic contracts, with futures markets showing no near-term relief as gas storage levels remain low.
Contract Rates Climb as Wholesale Markets Tighten
Wholesale gas prices at the Title Transfer Facility (TTF) climbed from approximately 40 euros per megawatt-hour at the end of June to nearly 90 euros, according to market data analyzed by Energievergelijk.nl. Consumers signing a one-year fixed contract on October 22 faced a lowest available rate of 1.737 euros per cubic meter at the most affordable provider, up from roughly 1.371 euros in June.

Among the five lowest-priced year contracts tracked by Energievergelijk.nl, annual costs for an average consumption of 900 cubic meters increased significantly compared to the summer. Energiedirect saw the largest increase among low-cost providers at an additional 399 euros annually, while Innova Energie added 353 euros, Delta Energie added 285 euros, OM added 258 euros, and Energie VanOns added 214 euros.
Major energy suppliers recorded even steeper adjustments. Powerpeers raised its annual contract rates by 57 cents per cubic meter, while Vattenfall and Engie increased rates by more than 50 cents per cubic meter, adding roughly 490 euros per year to identical consumption profiles.
Rising costs strain low income residents before winter
The escalating costs create severe strain for low-income residents dependent on fixed welfare benefits. Leonie, an 83-year-old resident in Hoogvliet, told Rijnmond that she does not turn on her heater at all and showers as little as possible with cold water at the tap to consume gas.
Energy expert Ben Woldring warned WNL that prices could continue to climb as winter temperatures prompt higher demand and force energy companies to purchase scarce supplies on the spot market. Woldring advised consumers to compare current contracts and reduce indoor temperatures to mitigate the rising financial burden.
Beyond household bills, European industrial competitiveness faces mounting pressure. An analysis published by Wynia’s Week noted that while European prices remain below the historic 2022 crisis peaks, the widening gap between European and American gas prices threatens energy-intensive industries, compounded by Asian markets pivoting toward cheaper coal alternatives following liquefied natural gas supply shifts.
Why natural gas prices spiked and current contract costs
Why did natural gas prices spike in late 2026?
Prices surged due to reduced natural gas and liquefied natural gas deliveries from the Middle East, specifically resulting from the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and infrastructure attacks amid regional conflicts involving Iran, according to bnnvara and Energievergelijk.nl.
What is the typical cost for a new one-year fixed contract?
As of October 22, the cheapest available one-year fixed contract on the Dutch market charged 1.737 euros per cubic meter, while top-tier providers like Mega and Powerpeers approached nearly 2.00 euros per cubic meter, as reported by Energievergelijk.nl.
When can vulnerable households apply for government financial assistance?
The national emergency energy fund, established during the 2022 energy crisis and extended through 2025, will reopen for new applications starting January 4, 2027, according to records cited by Wynia’s Week.
