Google ended its 12-year tradition of naming Android versions after desserts in 2019, switching to a numerical system to better serve a global audience, according to a blog post by Sameer Samat, vice president of product management for Android. The move aimed to simplify version identification and avoid cultural misunderstandings, as some regions lacked familiarity with treats like “gingerbread” or “jelly bean.”

Google cited challenges in global marketing and user comprehension when explaining the shift. Samat noted that the alphabetical dessert names, while whimsical, created confusion in regions where certain confections were unfamiliar. For example, “Lollipop” and “Marshmallow” held less relevance in non-English-speaking countries, where the “L” and “R” sounds are often indistinct. The numerical system, introduced with Android 10, allows users to easily identify the latest version without relying on cultural references.

While public releases dropped dessert names, Google retained them internally. Android 10 was codenamed “Quince Tart,” Android 11 as “Red Velvet Cake,” and Android 12 as “Snow Cone.” The latest version, Android 13, is internally known as “Tiramisu,” according to insiders familiar with the development process. These codenames remain a nod to the platform’s history, even as the public face of the OS adopts a more straightforward approach.
