Scientists have confirmed the existence of two marsupial species—the pygmy long-fingered possum (Dactylonax kambuayai) and the ring-tailed glider (Tous ayamaruensis)—previously believed to be extinct for over 6,000 years. The remarkable discovery, made in the remote rainforests of western New Guinea (specifically the Vogelkop Peninsula in Indonesian Papua), highlights how much remains unknown about global biodiversity and the importance of preserving fragile ecosystems.

Lazarus Taxa: Returning from the Past

These marsupials are classified as “Lazarus taxa”—species that reappear after being absent from the fossil record for a significant period. This specialized adaptation allows it to extract insect larvae from decaying wood—a niche that likely contributed to its ability to remain undetected for so long. Its quiet nocturnal habits and specialized diet further aided in evading detection.

The ring-tailed glider, a newly described genus of marsupial, exhibits unique characteristics compared to its Australian relatives, including bare ears and a prehensile tail used for gripping branches. Local communities have long known the glider, referring to it as “Tous,” and consider it a sacred animal connected to ancestral spirits.

The Role of Local Knowledge and Conservation

The rediscovery was significantly aided by collaboration with Indigenous communities in the Bird’s Head Peninsula. Local knowledge guided researchers to the animals’ habitat and provided insights into their behavior and ecological role. The Vogelkop Peninsula’s long isolation as part of the Australian continent before joining New Guinea may have allowed these ancient marsupial lineages to persist while related species disappeared elsewhere.
