Eberechi Eze’s Arsenal Future: Arteta’s Dilemma and Potential World Cup Boost

Eberechi Eze faces a critical period at Arsenal, with limited playing time raising questions about his future at the club. While the Gunners’ manager, Mikel Arteta, acknowledges Eze’s frustration with his recent lack of starts, the player’s performance in limited appearances is under scrutiny, particularly in the context of the upcoming summer and potential international opportunities.

Recent Struggles and Arteta’s Assessment

Eze has found consistent minutes in the Premier League difficult to secure, starting only twice since December. His struggles were evident in Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa in December, where he was substituted at halftime after failing to craft a significant impact. Arteta admitted Eze was “upset” with him for not starting in a subsequent match against Wolves, highlighting the player’s desire to prove himself.

Arteta, however, clarified that the club did not specifically target Eze for his goal-scoring record against Aston Villa, despite the player having scored five goals in his last few games against them. He jokingly stated, “We looked at every stat, but that one, to be incredibly honest, no.”

Competition for Playing Time

Eze faces stiff competition for a place in Arsenal’s midfield. Captain Martin Odegaard remains a key figure when fit, and Leandro Trossard has been in good form on the left wing – a position Eze also occupies. Arteta initially trialed Eze on the left, but his performance in the Aston Villa match led to him being benched for the following four league games.

World Cup Aspirations and Tuchel’s Presence

The situation is further complicated by Eze’s aspirations to represent England at the World Cup. England manager Thomas Tuchel was reportedly in attendance at a recent match, potentially scouting Eze. A run of consistent performances could be crucial for Eze to secure a place in Tuchel’s squad.

Eze’s Perspective and Future Prospects

Despite his limited playing time, Eze remains focused on making the most of his opportunities. Following a recent performance, he stated, “Today it’s worked out, we thank God for it. We put in a good performance. We did what we needed to do, which was the main thing. I’m always trying to get in those positions to be ready and to find the space and to work hard to get those opportunities. It takes a lot to get there and it’s worked out today.”

Speculation surrounds Eze’s potential future, with a possible loan move in January being discussed. However, Arsenal’s recent struggles, particularly the disappointing performances of Odegaard and others, may present an opportunity for Eze to re-establish himself in Arteta’s plans. Ethan Nwaneri may also benefit from the struggles of Odegaard and Eze, potentially earning more playing time.
