Meta equips Facebook with another AI function. How to explain what exactly it’s about.
Now you can animate your profile picture using artificial intelligence. Instead of a static photo, the portrait can be decorated with ready-made effects such as “party hat”, “confetti”, “waving” or heart gesture bring to life.
Further seasonal animations are to follow throughout the year. The prerequisite is a clearly recognizable individual portrait; The AI creates a short, moving version of it that is displayed in the feed and on the profile.
Video profile pictures return
It is noteworthy that Facebook had already discontinued real video profile pictures in 2022, allegedly due to lack of use. Now the concept is returning in AI form. Instead of recording a short video itself, the platform artificially simulates facial expressions and gestures.
In addition, Facebook is introducing a “Restyle” function for Stories and Memories. Photos can be transformed into different styles and moods using AI – such as anime looks, glowing effects or new backgrounds such as the beach or skyline. Text posts also receive AI-generated, animated backgrounds.
AI is taking over Facebook more and more
Meta is thus continuing to advance its AI offensive and is increasingly integrating generative functions into social interactions.
However, critics see this as a contradiction: social networks thrive on authentic moments and personal insights. AI-generated representations could dilute this character.
