fallout in Asia? Former devs Discuss Potential Settings Beyond America
The possibility of a Fallout game set outside of the United States has been a topic of discussion among developers and fans alike. While the series is deeply rooted in American culture, some believe a change of scenery could be incredibly compelling.
Bruce Nesmith, former design lead on Skyrim, recently expressed his thoughts on the matter.”It would be fascinating to take Fallout overseas,” he mused, “But the show is so steeped in American culture that I don’t think they’ll do that. It almost wouldn’t work in other places.” He cited cities like Paris,London, and Moscow as examples, suggesting they would fundamentally alter the game’s identity.
However, Nesmith did offer a compelling alternative: Asia. “I would probably go to Asia. I think tokyo would be great,” he stated. “You could turn to Kaiju, which would feel very natural for the series. You could do a lot of cool stuff there.” the incorporation of Kaiju – giant monsters – would align well with the post-apocalyptic, mutated creature aesthetic already present in Fallout.
This isn’t the first time the idea of an international Fallout setting has been explored. Tim Cain, co-creator of the original Fallout, revealed that potential locations in Russia and China were considered during the late 1990s. Ultimately, the team at Interplay and Black Isle Studios lacked sufficient knowledge of daily life and the 1950s futurist perspectives within those countries to accurately portray them.
While a departure from the American landscape remains uncertain, the interest in exploring new settings demonstrates a willingness to consider expanding the Fallout universe beyond its established borders.
