Fan Zhendong Joins Borussia Düsseldorf in Landmark Transfer

Borussia Düsseldorf has secured the signing of Olympic champion Fan Zhendong, a move heralded by table tennis legend Timo Boll as a potential turning point for the club and the Bundesliga. The transfer, effective July 1, 2026, sees Zhendong move from 1. FC Saarbrücken-TT to the record champions.

A Return to Dominance for Düsseldorf?

Boll, now an ambassador for Borussia Düsseldorf after his retirement, believes Zhendong’s arrival will restore the club to its former glory. “Düsseldorf has dominated German table tennis for years, but has struggled heavily in the last two or three years,” Boll told Bild. He added that with Zhendong on the team, Borussia is “again the absolute favorite for any title.”

Last season, Borussia Düsseldorf lost the German championship title to Ochsenhausen, marking the end of an era. They also faced repeated defeats against 1. FC Saarbrücken in the Champions League. Boll noted, “Borussia has lost a bit of its status as the Bayern Munich of table tennis. I think that’s what people in Düsseldorf would like to be called again.”

Zhendong’s Commitment to Saarbrücken

Despite the upcoming move, Fan Zhendong remains committed to 1. FC Saarbrücken for the remainder of the current season. Boll emphasized Zhendong’s professionalism, stating, “He’ll give his all again for his current club. He’s professional enough.” Boll clarified that Zhendong will continue to compete fully for Saarbrücken and will not prioritize aiding Düsseldorf before the transfer. “That’s okay, and that’s how it has to be that he then gives his all again for Saarbrücken – and doesn’t somehow give Düsseldorf a title now. That won’t happen under any circumstances.”

Final Showdowns on the Horizon

Both Düsseldorf and Saarbrücken will compete in the final tournaments of the Champions League (May 16th/17th) and Bundesliga (May 30th/31st), setting the stage for potential clashes between the two teams before Zhendong officially joins Borussia Düsseldorf. Saarbrücken is considered a strong contender in both competitions.

Fan Zhendong’s Illustrious Career

Fan Zhendong, the 2024 Olympic champion in both singles and team events, brings a wealth of experience and accolades to Düsseldorf. He first gained prominence in 2013, winning gold at the Asian Youth Games and securing his first title on the ITTF World Tour. He reached the top 3 in the world rankings in March 2014 and held the number one ranking from April 2018, surpassing Timo Boll. Zhendong led the world rankings for over 250 weeks, including an uninterrupted period from November 2020 to June 2023.

Boll’s Influence on the Transfer

Zhendong himself cited Timo Boll as a key factor in his decision to join Borussia Düsseldorf. “If I now begin a new chapter in Düsseldorf, I feel a special connection to the club where my friend Timo Boll left his impressive legacy,” Zhendong stated. He expressed his eagerness to support the team and honor Boll’s contributions.

Düsseldorf’s Strengthened Roster

Fan Zhendong will join a strong Düsseldorf lineup that includes Dang Qiu (European Champion 2022), Anton Källberg (Olympic silver medalist 2024), Kanak Jha, and Li Yongyin. Manager Andreas Preuß expressed his excitement, stating, “Fan is exactly the player we wanted and a real boost and asset to our team and our entire club.”
