Givairo Read Transfer Cost Dispute Between FC Volendam and Feyenoord Over Missing 200000 Euro Fee
FC Volendam missed out on an educational fee of approximately €200,000 after defender Givairo Read transferred to Feyenoord in 2023 without a professional contract, as reported by VoetbalPrimeur. Because the right-back was not tied to a contract at the time, Feyenoord owed no standard transfer fee to Volendam. Under Dutch football regulations, clubs can claim a training compensation fee, but the paperwork must be submitted to the KNVB within a strict deadline.
According to former FC Volendam technical director Jasper van Leeuwen, speaking to the General Daily Newspaper and cited by FR-Fans.nl, an internal administrative mix-up caused the delay. “At the administration office, Givairo ended up on a pile with a number of youth players who were going to Ajax,” Van Leeuwen explained. “As a result, the claim arrived a few days too late.” Volendam initially believed the missed deadline would not damage their financial claim because Feyenoord allegedly promised to honor the payment anyway.
Feyenoord Relies on Legal Deadlines While Volendam Demands Moral Obligations
Feyenoord ultimately refused to disburse the €200,000 compensation, taking the stance that they were not legally bound to pay after the KNVB deadline passed. The Rotterdam club stated that they always follow applicable transfer guidelines and declined to comment on individual financial arrangements, as noted by VoetbalPrimeur. Van Leeuwen criticized this rigid adherence to the rules, arguing that it hurts smaller clubs. “Yes, it was an administrative mistake,” Van Leeuwen told the General Daily Newspaper, according to VoetbalPrimeur. “But in our view, there is also such a thing as a moral obligation, especially after their promise. This way you undermine the business model of Dutch football. 200,000 euros is a lot of money for FC Volendam.” Agent Bert van Dun calls the matter a matter between the clubs, although he does not find Feyenoord’s conduct classy. “Was it classy?” Van Dun added that the issue remains strictly a matter between the two clubs.
Rapid Market Valuation Rise and Future Departure Expectations for Givairo Read
The financial dispute takes on added weight as Givairo Read’s market value surges in the Eredivisie. Since his arrival in Rotterdam, the 20-year-old defender has extended his contract through mid-2029 and now holds an estimated market value of €30 million, according to FR12.nl.
Before committing to Feyenoord, Read and his family toured the club facilities and listened to a detailed development presentation. Robin van Persie, then incoming coach of Feyenoord Under 19, spent 25 minutes detailing his tactical plans for the youngster, convincing Read to restart his development in the youth setup despite holding senior options, 1908.nl reported. With strong performances securing his spot in the first team, agent Van Dun confirmed that external international interest is growing, meaning Feyenoord must prepare for substantial transfer offers in upcoming windows.
