The Power of Fiber: A Webinar with Amy Volkman, RDN
On Tuesday, March 10, at noon, Amy Volkman, a registered dietitian nutritionist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) Munroe-Meyer Institute, will present a webinar titled “Fiber – Why We Need Our Short (Chain Fatty Acid) Kings!” The event, hosted through Zoom, is part of the Olson Center for Women’s Health and UNMC College of Nursing webinar series and is free and open to both healthcare providers and the general public.
Understanding the Importance of Dietary Fiber
Volkman’s presentation will delve into the crucial role dietary fiber plays in maintaining overall health. She will explain how fiber supports cardiovascular health and aids in healthy digestion. The webinar will similarly explore the function of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) – produced when fiber is fermented in the gut – and their impact on energy production, gut health, and metabolic processes.
Fiber-Rich Foods and Optimal Gut Function
A key component of the webinar will focus on identifying common foods rich in fiber. Volkman will analyze how incorporating a diverse range of plant-based foods can promote optimal gut function. This approach emphasizes the importance of a varied diet for maximizing the benefits of fiber.
Continuing Education Opportunities
The webinar offers 1.0 ANCC contact hour of nursing credit at no cost. Registration is available through Zoom. For questions, contact Valeta Creason-Wahl via email or at 402-559-7487.
