Financial Literacy for Children: A Growing Focus in Belgium

The importance of financial education for young people is gaining momentum in Belgium, with initiatives aimed at equipping children with the skills to manage their finances effectively. This week, many children across the country will be introduced to concepts of money management during “Money Week,” spearheaded by the Financial Services and Markets Authority (FSMA) through its financial education program, Wikifin.

National Initiatives to Boost Financial Awareness

Wikifin is organizing a range of activities for primary and secondary school students to raise awareness about financial education. Simultaneously, in Charleroi, the Ener’J information and entertainment center, in collaboration with the BELvue museum, Febelfin (the Belgian banking federation), and Assuralia (the federation of insurance companies), is hosting an exhibition titled “Mystery of Finances.” This exhibition, along with accompanying workshops, primarily targets secondary school students.

The Importance of Early Financial Education

These initiatives underscore a growing recognition of the need to start financial education early. By introducing children to financial concepts at a young age, the aim is to foster responsible financial habits and empower them to make informed decisions throughout their lives.
