Firefly Extends Subang-Seletar Flight Cancellations as Singapore Haze Reaches Season High

Operations on this route will be suspended for a 10th consecutive day as Firefly flights between Malaysia’s Subang Airport and Singapore’s Seletar Airport are pushed back further, with the Malaysian carrier extending cancellations until Oct 19. The disruption stems from persistent smoke haze originating from Sumatra and Kalimantan.

Air quality across Singapore remained poor on Oct 18, according to the National Environment Agency. At 10am, the western region recorded a season high 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index reading of 230 falling within the “very unhealthy” band, which then eased slightly to 227 by noon. The regional haze first pushed the 24-hour PSI into unhealthy levels on Sept 4.

Airline Reallocation and Refund Policies for Affected Passengers

According to information published on Firefly stated its online platform, passengers impacted by the suspension will, where feasible and subject to seat availability, be transferred to Malaysia Airlines services operating from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore. Travelers who decline the replacement flights can receive a full refund processed back to the original payment within 30 working days, a Firefly spokesperson said.

The regional airline first suspended operations between Singapore’s Seletar Airport and Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang for the period spanning Oct 10 to 12. The airline subsequently extended the cancellations twice—first to Oct 14, and then to Oct 16—before pushing the suspension through Oct 19.

Precautionary Safety Measures and Official Monitoring

Firefly described the groundings as a proactive safety precaution intended to prioritize operational safety and certainty while minimizing inconvenience. The airline’s operations control centre continues to monitor the weather and haze situation closely.
